DataMatrix Converter

A small web tool that turns a box of EPS label files into one print-ready PDF.

Challenge

When a seller orders product labels with DataMatrix codes, the codes often arrive as hundreds of EPS files packed into archives inside archives. A label printer cannot take an EPS folder, and opening every file by hand to print it is slow and easy to get wrong.

What we built

A single page with a drop zone. You drop a ZIP or RAR archive, choose how to name the results and whether you want a PDF, a CSV or both, and press Convert. The archive is unpacked down to five levels of nesting, every code is read, and a live log shows each stage while a progress bar moves. The result is a PDF with one code per page, sized to the code with a thin margin, plus a CSV with every code on its own line. When the archive holds several products in separate folders, each product gets its own files and they come back together in one ZIP.

How it went

The first working version was ready on 27 February 2026. By the end of that day it showed a progress bar and a live log, had no file size limit and unpacked ZIP archives nested five levels deep. Over the next month it learned to read RAR, to split the result by product folders and nested archives, to keep non-Latin folder names intact in archives made on Windows, and to name the results after the folder or the archive. In June 2026 we published an English version as open source under the MIT license.

For the demo we made a sample archive with 96 fictional GS1 codes for three products, one of them inside a nested archive, and ran the real converter on it in all six combinations of settings. Each run took 1.0 to 1.4 seconds, and every page of the resulting PDFs reads back to exactly the codes we generated. The demo replays those runs step by step, and a file of your own stays on your device.

Result

A label order becomes one upload and one PDF to send to the printer, with a CSV to check the codes against.
